Assam student body holds torch rally over Tikak Colliery land dispute in Margherita

The All Assam Tangsa Students’ Union (AATSU), along with local residents, staged a torch rally in historical Malu village, Ledo, protesting against the alleged encroachment of tribal land by Tikak Colliery.

The demonstrators marched through the village in the evening, chanting slogans against the colliery’s dumping practices and demanding immediate action from the authorities.

The colliery, operated by Northeastern Coalfields Coal India Ltd, has long been accused of using tribal lands for waste disposal, leading to escalating tensions between the local community and the authorities.

Residents have repeatedly objected to these actions, but local organizations claim that no substantial measures have been taken to address their grievances.

The student body accused the authorities of disregarding indigenous rights and warned of intensified protests if the dumping activities continued.

AATSU leaders have stated that unless their concerns are addressed, they will escalate their movement with larger demonstrations.
