Assam: Suspect in Kokrajhar LIC branch robbery, shot while fleeing police custody

An encounter in Kokrajhar, Assam, resulted in the shooting of Amir Hussain, 38, a suspect in a recent robbery in the LIC branch. Hussain, from Village No. 3 Bhandara Bijni Manikpur in Chirang district, sustained a bullet wound to his left leg during the incident.

The operation followed a June 25 robbery outside Axis Bank in Kokrajhar, where thieves made off with over Rs 34 lakhs. Police apprehended four suspects from Chirang, Dhubri, and Kokrajhar districts in connection with the crime.

On June 30 night, acting on leads, police conducted a search at Salakati Bedlangmary Tea Estate. During the operation, Hussain allegedly attempted to flee, prompting officers to open fire. He was subsequently taken to Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital in Kokrajhar for treatment.

Assam's Director General of Police, GP Singh, confirmed the developments on social media. "Reference recent robbery of Rs 34 Lacs of LIC from near Axis Bank, Kokrajhar town - Total four persons, including Manager and driver of the cash carrying vehicle, have been arrested from various parts of Assam and nearby state and Rs 21.5 Lacs recovered so far. Well done @KokrajharP led by SP," he stated.
