Assam: Suspected thief dies of electrocution at Dhubri construction site amid rising theft concerns
A man suspected of being involved in theft died of electrocution at a residential construction site in Assam’s Dhubri early Friday morning, May 15, triggering fresh concerns over the worsening law and order situation in the town.
The incident took place at Ward No. 8 on Zakir Hussain Road at the residence of Lutfar Rahman, former president of the Dhubri Zila Sahitya Sabha. The deceased has not yet been identified.
According to Rahman, the sequence of events began shortly after dawn. “At 5:00 AM, after finishing my prayers, I opened the main gate to allow easy entry for our domestic helps when they arrived later, and then I went back to sleep,” he said.
Around 7 am, Rahman said he was awakened by a loud noise coming from the under-construction portion of the property. When he went to inspect the area, he found a man lying on the ground while still clutching an electrical cable.
Police reached the spot soon after being informed and launched an investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the man may have been electrocuted while attempting to move through the construction site, though officials have not confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident comes amid growing public anger over a recent spike in theft and burglary cases across Dhubri town. Residents from several localities have repeatedly complained about break-ins targeting both homes and commercial establishments.
People living across the town’s 16 wards have alleged that a “theft spree” has created fear among residents, with many questioning the effectiveness of policing in the area. Local residents had recently approached the district Superintendent of Police seeking stricter night patrols and stronger action from the Sadar Police Station.
While the investigation into Friday’s electrocution death is still underway, the incident has once again drawn attention to the increasing insecurity being felt by many residents in Dhubri.
