Assam: Tai Ahom body seeks Rs 20,000 crore flood relief package, issues appeal ahead of Census

The Tai Ahom Jatiya Parishad has placed several key demands before the government concerning the recent devastating floods in Upper Assam and the upcoming caste-based Census, while calling on the Ahom community to preserve its distinct identity during the enumeration process.

 

The resolutions were announced at a press conference following an extended executive committee meeting of the organisation held in Moran.

 

The Parishad demanded a one-time financial package of Rs 20,000 crore from the Central Government for the rehabilitation of people affected by the recent floods in Upper Assam. It also announced that a central delegation of the organisation would soon visit the flood-hit areas to assess the extent of the damage.

 

On the forthcoming Census, the organisation appealed to members of the Ahom community to write "Ban-Phi-Dam" or "Ahom Hindu" in the religion column to preserve their unique religious identity.

 

The Parishad also urged the community to register "Tai Axomiya" as their mother tongue during the Census.

 

The announcements were made by the organisation's working president, Dr Dayananda Borgohain, at the press conference.

 

Also present were general secretary Amar Jyoti Arandhara, Tai Ahom Students' Union president Milan Borgohain, and working president Debajit Gogoi.
