Margherita witnessed a black flag protest on August 29 as members of the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) raised their voices against Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state.
The demonstration, organised by TAIPA’s Margherita Co-District Committee at North Margherita Rangmanch, highlighted the long-standing demand for granting Scheduled Tribe status to six ethnic communities, including the Tai Ahoms.
Protesters carried black flags to register their opposition, drawing a heavy presence of police and district administration officials who attempted to prevent the gathering.
TAIPA leaders declared that the agitation would continue until their demand is met. They also issued a warning that the organisation could consider boycotting the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections if the government fails to recognise the six communities as Scheduled Tribes.
