Assam: TAYPA holds massive torch rally in Moran, renews demand for ST status and autonomous governance
A massive torch rally swept through Moran, situated between Dibrugarh and Charaideo districts, as members of the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) and its supporters reignited their long-standing demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and autonomous governance.
The rally, organised by the Central Committee of TAYPA in collaboration with the Tai Ahom Mahila Parishad and local residents, commenced from Ushapur Playground, winding through the town’s key routes before culminating at the same venue.
Resonating with fiery chants such as “Jaagega Ahom, Jaagega Hi” (Ahom Will Rise, It Surely Will), “No ST, No Rest”, “No ST, No Vote”, “We May Die but We Will Secure Tribal Status”, and “Down with BJP”, the protestors made their sentiments clear, amplifying the call for recognition and justice for the Tai Ahom community.
The programme was spearheaded by the TAYPA faction of the Diganta Tamuli group, with prominent leaders including Green Bargohain, Ranjan Boruah, Abhijit Bargohain, Nipam Dihingia, and Rekha Gogoi leading the demonstration.
In a strong message to the government, the protestors demanded immediate constitutional recognition of the Tai Ahoms as a Scheduled Tribe, along with the establishment of autonomous governance to preserve their cultural and political rights. They cautioned that continued neglect of their demands could translate into political backlash for the BJP in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Participants from the Moran Mahkuma Committee and Moran Anchalik Committee of TAYPA actively joined the demonstration, sharply criticising the BJP-led government for its alleged failure to address the long-pending aspirations of the Tai Ahom community.
