Assam: Tea workers in Baksa demand fair wages, accuse owner of autocratic behaviour

A group of tea workers from Fatimabad Tea Estate in Assam's Baksa staged a protest, demanding their rightful wages. The workers accused their owner of autocratic behaviour towards them and chanted slogans, like, "Owner Rajesh Jalan, go back" and "Manager Dheeraj Barman, go back."

During their protest, the workers had several demands such as that their wages must be paid, bonuses should be disbursed, vacant positions must be filled, and the exploitation of tea workers must end.

A team, including the Central Provident Fund Commissioner, visited the estate on the Chief Minister's directive to understand the workers' issues. However, the workers alleged that tea estate owner Rajesh Jalan had not taken their concerns seriously even after officials' inspection.

The protest, which has been going on for several days, displayed the mounting frustration of labourers at the tea estate.

Earlier, a video surfaced on February 27, which depicted the workers took to streets to express their displeasure towards their prolonged struggle against unpaid wages.
