Assam tea workers' union condemns Congress leader's 'derogatory' post, plans FIR

The Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), the state’s largest trade union representing tea garden workers, has strongly criticised a Congress worker over alleged derogatory remarks made on social media, warning of legal action.

Hari Nanda Gorh, secretary of the ACMS Margherita branch, said the comments posted by Chitran Deka on Facebook had hurt the sentiments of tea garden communities and risked creating tension among different groups.

Gorh termed the remarks “unfortunate” and accused the Congress of neglecting tea garden workers during its decades in power. He claimed that significant welfare measures for the community were introduced only after the BJP came to power at the Centre in 2014 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and in Assam in 2016.

He cited initiatives such as land pattas, wage increases, construction of schools in tea garden areas and employment opportunities as key developments that, he said, had improved conditions for workers after years of neglect.

According to Gorh, the recent social media post had triggered resentment within tea garden communities, raising concerns about potential unrest if such remarks go unchecked.

The ACMS has decided to lodge an FIR against Deka over the alleged offensive statements, he added, urging political parties and individuals to refrain from making comments that could disturb social harmony in the state.
