Assam: Teacher accused in Moran student's suicide remains absconding
A teacher accused by the family of a Class IX student of subjecting her to mental harassment before she died by suicide remains absconding, even as police continue their investigation into the case.
The student, Aini Sonowal, allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Garh Pathar under Bamunbari in Moran on June 16. Her family has lodged a complaint at the Bamunbari Police Outpost, alleging that harassment by the teacher and a classmate drove the teenager to take the extreme step.
According to the family's complaint, the incident followed an altercation between Aini and one of her classmates. The student allegedly created a fake Instagram account and used a photograph of the teacher to post obscene comments.
The family alleged that after the incident came to light, the teacher summoned Aini to the school, subjected her to mental harassment and forced her to post an objectionable WhatsApp status using her father's mobile phone. They claimed that the humiliation caused to her father left the student emotionally distressed.
In a written clarification, the school's headmaster said the teacher had taken three days' leave but had remained absent from the school without permission for the past six days. The headmaster also said the teacher's mobile phone had remained switched off during this period.
The student's death has left teachers and residents of the area in shock. A teacher at the school appealed to the accused to come forward and cooperate with the investigation instead of remaining in hiding.
