Assam: Teacher arrested for allegedly showing objectionable content to students inside classroom

A teacher of a government primary school in Assam's Dhubri district, has been arrested for allegedly showing objectionable content to minor students inside a classroom.


The accused, Abdul Khaleque, an assistant teacher at 989 No. Rashtrabhasha Hindi Primary School in the Balurchar area, was taken into custody by Dhubri Sadar Police on Tuesday. February 24, following complaints from guardians. The incident has enraged guardians, particularly because the school, established in 1949, is considered one of the oldest and most respected institutions in the 3 No. Balurchar area.


The matter came to light when several students reportedly returned home in distress and narrated the alleged incident to their parents. According to the complaints, Khaleque is accused of using his mobile phone during school hours to display explicit and inappropriate images to minor students inside the classroom.


Alarmed by the allegations, parents approached Ward Commissioner Joydeb Krishna Paul and demanded immediate intervention to ensure the safety of their children.


On Tuesday morning, Paul visited the school premises and formally informed Headteacher Rakesh Roy about the accusations. As news spread, a large number of guardians gathered at the campus, leading to tense scenes and strong protests.


With public anger mounting, school authorities and the ward commissioner summoned the police. Personnel from Dhubri Sadar Police Station arrived at the spot and took Abdul Khaleque into custody.


He was escorted out of the school amid slogans demanding strict punishment. Many parents described the alleged act as a betrayal of the sacred trust between a teacher and students.


“A teacher is meant to be a guardian and a role model. For such an act to happen in a school that has shaped generations since 1949 is a deep stain on society,” said one distressed parent.


Police have registered a case and are interrogating the accused at Dhubri Sadar Police Station. Ward Commissioner Joydeb Krishna Paul has urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, including a forensic examination of the teacher’s mobile device to verify the allegations.

Headteacher Rakesh Roy has reportedly assured guardians that a formal report will be forwarded to the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), seeking permanent disciplinary action as per service rules.

Local leaders have also called for stricter monitoring of mobile phone usage by teaching and non-teaching staff during school hours, stressing the need to safeguard the mental well-being and security of minor students.
