Assam: Temple idols vandalised in Mangaldai; police launch probe
Unidentified miscreants vandalised idols in several temples across different areas in and around Mangaldai, including Mowamari and Gerimari on January 21, triggering concern among local residents.
According to local sources, the perpetrators allegedly entered multiple temples and damaged the idols kept inside. In many of the temples affected, the heads of idols of Goddess Kali were found severed, pointing to a similar pattern of vandalism across locations.
Residents believe the incident may have been pre-planned and carried out by an organised group, noting that it would be difficult for a small number of individuals to vandalise temples across multiple locations within a single night. Locals have also expressed apprehension that the act may have been intended to disturb communal harmony and create unrest in the region.
Police reached the affected areas soon after receiving information and have launched an investigation into the incident. Security has been tightened in sensitive locations, and officials said efforts are underway to identify those responsible.
