A tense situation has developed in the 22 No. Baghmara Gaon Panchayat of Bajali district after the much-anticipated process of forming its new committee was abruptly cancelled on Thursday.
According to sources, on 4 June, the Bajali District Commissioner’s office issued invitation letters to all ward members, asking them to attend the meeting to constitute the panchayat and elect its President and Vice-President. The meeting was officially scheduled for 27 June at 10 AM.
On Thursday morning, all ward members duly arrived and were present at the panchayat office at the designated time. However, at around 12 PM, the Panchayat Secretary unexpectedly informed them that the committee formation process had been cancelled without further explanation.
This sudden move has sparked anger and confusion among the ward members and local residents alike. Many are questioning why the process was called off at the last moment despite clear instructions in the invitation letter specifying the 10 AM meeting. Moreover, residents have pointed out that no government official arrived at the venue even by 1 PM, deepening suspicions about the reasons behind the cancellation.
The cancellation comes amid reports of a clear majority supporting one candidate. Seven ward members had reportedly pledged their support to Satyendra Kalita for the post of Panchayat President, while only two members backed Nripen Nath, a ward member and former Bajali BJP Mandal president.
With the balance of support appearing to favor Kalita, many locals are now questioning whether political maneuvering is behind the abrupt suspension of the process. “Has the formation of the new committee run into some hidden calculations?” asked one frustrated local.
Adding to the anger, ward members also expressed strong resentment toward Minister Ranjit Kumar Dass, holding him indirectly responsible for the uncertainty and perceived interference in the local democratic process.
Meanwhile, the Panchayat Secretary has declined to offer any clear reason for the cancellation, further fuelling suspicions and discontent. Local residents and ward members have openly expressed their frustration to the media, demanding transparency and accountability from the administration.
