Assam: Tension grips Nagaon’s Puranigudam as locals protest over youth’s custodial death

A wave of anger and sorrow swept through Nagaon’s Purani Gudam area as locals staged a massive protest at the local police outpost on Saturday, demanding justice for the mysterious death of a young man, Abidur Rahman. The demonstrators arrived at the police station with Abidur’s body, alleging foul play and police inaction.

According to reports, 24-year-old Abidur Rahman, a resident of Nagaon, was found dead under suspicious circumstances. His grieving family and agitated locals suspect that he was murdered by a relative of his girlfriend, Sania Begum, with whom he had been in a relationship for the past several months.

Speaking to reporters, Abidur’s family alleged that the relationship had not been accepted by Sania's family, and Abidur had received repeated threats from her relatives. “He told us that they warned him to stay away from Sania. He was scared. Now he’s gone,” said a family member.

The protest turned tense as hundreds gathered at the police outpost, chanting slogans and demanding immediate arrest of those involved. Police officials had to intervene to calm the situation and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
