Assam: Tensions erupt in Dalgaon eviction drive, AAMSU and AIUDF clash over alleged bias

An eviction drive by the Darrang district administration turned chaotic today as a fierce clash erupted between All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) workers in the presence of Dalgaon constituency MLA Mujibur Rahman.

The administration aimed to evict 88 shops along the Daipam-Basimari link road near National Highway 15. While 80 feet of encroached land on either side of the road was marked for clearance, AAMSU alleged only 50 feet were being evicted, accusing the authorities of staging a “drama.”

Tensions flared when a group of AAMSU workers arrived at the site and issued statements to the media. AIUDF workers reportedly countered their claims, chanting “AAMSU Murdabad” in a rally. This led to a heated exchange, escalating into a physical confrontation between the two factions.

MLA Mujibur Rahman, present at the site, asserted that AAMSU supported the eviction drive, referencing their alleged backing for clearing areas housing cattle herders. Meanwhile, AAMSU’s central vice president, Abdur Rahman Biswas, reacted sharply, condemning the clashes and announcing a potential legal challenge.

The situation remains tense in Basimari, with police and administration closely monitoring developments to prevent further unrest.
