Assam: Tensions erupt in Kokrajhar as mob burns six houses over alleged cow theft

A volatile situation unfolded in Kokrajhar district when an enraged mob set fire to six houses in Duramari, allegedly belonging to individuals accused of cow theft. 

The homes targeted were those of Shahjahan Sheikh, Moidul Sheikh, Sanwar Sheikh, Amjad Ali, Surman Ali, and Asad Ali Akand, residents of Duramari, Hekaipara, and Tabursar villages.

Villagers accused the individuals of repeatedly stealing cows, claiming the acts damaged the village’s reputation and disrupted the community.

The anger culminated in a mob attack, reportedly involving locals from nearby villages, who united to seek vigilante justice by burning the accused’s homes.

Kokrajhar Police quickly intervened to control the unrest, with officers deployed to the site to defuse tensions. 

The incident underscores the dangers of mob justice and the serious consequences of unchecked anger in volatile situations.

Authorities have launched an investigation and are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
