Assam: Thousands climb Kokrajhar's Baokhungri Hill as festival concludes on a vibrant note
The three-day Baokhungri Festival concluded on April 14, with a grand and vibrant celebration, as thousands of devotees and visitors climbed the sacred Baokhungri Hill near the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.
Organised by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Tourism Department, the festival began on April 12 with a colourful programme showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Bodo community and other indigenous groups of the region.
The final day witnessed an overwhelming turnout, with people from across the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and various parts of Assam gathering to participate in the age-old tradition of climbing Baokhungri Hill. The ritual coincided with the eve of Rongjali Bwisagu and Rongali Bihu, transforming the hill and surrounding festival grounds into a lively hub of devotion and celebration.
Climbing the historic hill on the day of Sankranti is considered a sacred practice among the Bodo and other local communities. According to popular belief, reaching the hilltop on this auspicious day brings good health, prosperity, and the fulfilment of wishes, while also helping devotees overcome physical and mental challenges.
In addition to the traditional hill climb, the concluding day featured lively Bwisagu dance performances and cultural presentations by various communities. The air resonated with traditional music, vibrant costumes, and enthusiastic participation, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere.
The successful conclusion of the Baokhungri Festival once again underscored the region’s rich cultural diversity and strengthened its growing appeal as a cultural tourism destination. The event not only preserved indigenous traditions but also promoted community bonding and tourism in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
