Assam: Thousands in Kokrajhar honour Zubeen Garg a month after his death, renew call for justice

Kokrajhar witnessed a massive gathering of fans a month after the death of renowned Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, as admirers came together to honour his legacy and push for justice.

Organised by the local fan group Zubeen Anuragi, the event drew thousands, who lit over 5,000 earthen lamps in a symbolic display of solidarity. The lamps spelt out #JusticeForZubeenGarg, reflecting the community’s call for a fair and transparent investigation into the singer’s death.

Adding to the atmosphere, participants released sky lanterns carrying messages of remembrance, hope, and justice. A Nagara Naam, a traditional devotional performance, was also performed to mark the one-month memorial.

The event included a signature campaign demanding a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death. Fans expressed frustration over what they see as undue delays in the investigation, with some accusing authorities of politicising the matter.

“By now, the investigating officer should have visited the incident site. This delay is unacceptable,” one organiser said. They emphasised that, despite the grief, supporters will continue to fight for justice and truth in the singer’s memory.
