Assam: Three youths arrested with banned drugs in Ledo, Margherita

The menace of drug abuse and trafficking continues to rise alarmingly in Ledo and adjoining areas of Margherita in Tinsukia district. 

On Tuesday night, a notorious drug peddler, identified as Jengu from Tirap Colliery, was arrested along with two other youths—Babu Sona and Amit Upadhyay of Margherita Chariali.

The arrests were made following a tip-off, in a joint effort by members of the AJYCP, Bir Lachit Sena Margherita Regional Committee, and officials of the Sarvajanik Pragati Samiti. 

The three were apprehended from the Ledo Tirap Colliery area with banned substances in their possession and later handed over to the Ledo police.

Locals allege that the trio has been running a flourishing drug racket across different parts of Margherita for years. 

Despite repeated crackdowns, residents say the illegal trade of dangerous drugs is spreading rapidly in Margherita, Bargolai, and Ledo under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency, while the co-district administration and local police have failed to fully dismantle the drug syndicates.
