Assam: Tinsukia police detain 36 in late-night crackdown on public drinking

Tinsukia Police detained 36 people during a late-night crackdown on public drinking and drunken nuisance in the Tinsukia Sadar area, officials said.

The operation targeted people allegedly found consuming alcohol in public places, sitting along roadsides with liquor and creating disturbances while intoxicated.

Police said the action was aimed at preventing late-night drinking and related nuisance from affecting public spaces and disrupting normal life in the town.

Authorities warned that drinking in public, creating a nuisance while intoxicated or engaging in activities that disturb public peace and order would invite action under the law.

Police said the operation would not be a one-time exercise and that similar checks would be carried out in different parts of Tinsukia town. Surveillance is also expected to be intensified at locations where public drinking and late-night disturbances are frequently reported.

Hotels and other establishments have also been brought under the scanner. Police warned that establishments found violating applicable rules, including by facilitating unlawful drinking or selling liquor in violation of the law, could face investigation and legal action against those responsible.

The crackdown comes as police step up efforts to curb late-night disorder and maintain public safety in Tinsukia.

Officials said repeated violations would continue to invite action, with public spaces particularly under watch during night hours.
