Assam to begin major water resources project post-monsoon, says minister Piyush Hazarika

Assam's Water Resources Minister, Piyush Hazarika, announced significant upcoming construction work for the state's water infrastructure. Speaking at the Darrang District Commissioner's office, Hazarika disclosed that the Water Resources Department will commence the construction of 220 kilometers of embankment after the monsoon season, with 26 kilometers of this work to be undertaken in Darrang district.

Minister Hazarika detailed the project timeline, indicating that once the 220 kilometers are completed, only 100 kilometers will remain, which is expected to be finished by next year. He acknowledged the challenges faced by residents living between the river and Mathauri, who are severely impacted by floods, but noted that special arrangements for these populations cannot be made at this time.

After a review meeting at the Darrang Commissioner's Office, Minister Hazarika, accompanied by MLA Basanta Das, MP Dilip Saikia, and Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Chairman Gurujyoti Das, personally inspected the erosion and flood situation in the Gerimari and Moamari areas near Mangaldoi.

The minister's visit underscores the state government's commitment to addressing flood and erosion issues, aiming to enhance water management and infrastructure resilience in Assam.
