Assam to develop spiritual circuit linking 21 sites associated with Srimanta Sankardev

The Assam government has unveiled plans to develop a Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev Spiritual Circuit, aimed at reviving and promoting 21 locations associated with the life and travels of the revered saint.

Srimanta Sankardev, a central figure in Assam’s spiritual and cultural heritage, is believed to have spent at least a day at each of these sites. The proposed circuit will connect these locations to encourage pilgrimage, cultural tourism, and long-term preservation of the state’s rich Vaishnavite legacy.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking on January 27 during the inauguration of the Sri Sri Damodardeva International Auditorium at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati, reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening cultural infrastructure and positioning Guwahati as a major hub for conventions and cultural events.

Addressing the gathering, Sarma said the newly built 800-seater auditorium will serve as a key platform for cultural programmes, performances, and public events, further enhancing Assam’s artistic ecosystem and creating opportunities for national and international engagements.

Calling the auditorium a “significant addition” to Assam’s cultural landscape, the Chief Minister said the project reflects the government’s focus on promoting heritage, arts, and community participation.

He also outlined the broader vision of developing Assam as a spiritual tourism destination, noting that the Sankardev Spiritual Circuit will involve the restoration and promotion of sites linked to the 15th-century Vaishnavite saint’s extensive travels. The initiative, he said, aims to preserve Assam’s cultural heritage while attracting pilgrims and tourists from across India and abroad.
