At least six people lost their lives in multiple landslides hit by torrential rains across Guwahati, Assam, on May 30. The state has been placed under a red alert as authorities scramble to respond to the crisis.
Among the deceased is a mother-daughter duo identified as Poonam Goswami and Neelakshi Goswami, who were buried under debris in Chapaidong, Kharghuli. In a separate incident, 5-year-old Ranjita Boro also succumbed to injuries following a landslide in the area.
Another fatality was reported from Datalpara, where Deepjyoti Boro was killed after a landslip destroyed his home. The deluge has led to widespread destruction in several parts of the city including Kamakhya, Kharghuli, Gorchuk, Chandrapur, Bonda, and Noonmati — all of which witnessed significant landslides and structural damage.
Emergency teams and disaster response personnel have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. Authorities have urged residents living in vulnerable zones to evacuate immediately. Schools have been closed, and transportation in affected localities remains disrupted.
With heavy rain forecasted to continue, officials are closely monitoring hill slopes and urban drainage systems to prevent further casualties.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has issued a red alert for the region, warning of more landslides and flash floods in the coming days.
