Jonbeel Mela Revives Barter System, Celebrates Assam's Cultural Heritage

The vibrant Jonbeel Mela witnessed a significant cultural event on its second day as the traditional barter system was formally inaugurated by Ramakant Deori, MLA from Morigaon constituency. The inauguration, which began with the exchange of messages of harmony and unity known as Pahar Bhaiyyam from Dokmokali, set the tone for the day’s celebrations.

The barter system, a unique and age-old tradition of the Jonbeel Mela, saw enthusiastic participation from various indigenous communities, including the Tiwa, Karbi, Khasi, and Jaintia tribes. Farmers and traders from the hills and plains gathered to exchange goods without the use of currency, fostering a spirit of mutual cooperation and cultural integration. Essential items such as rice, vegetables, dried fish, and local herbs were commonly exchanged, reflecting the deep-rooted practices that have sustained these communities for generations.

Speaking at the event, MLA Ramakant Deori highlighted the significance of preserving such indigenous traditions in the face of modernization. He emphasized that the barter system not only strengthens economic ties among communities but also reinforces social bonds and cultural identity.

The second day’s events were marked by colorful displays of traditional attire, folk performances, and vibrant markets buzzing with activity. The Pahar Bhaiyyam ritual, symbolizing unity and peace, resonated deeply with attendees, reminding everyone of the mela's core values of harmony and brotherhood.
