Assam: Traffic police official killed on spot after being mowed down by car, 3 critically injured
A horrific road accident on the Doom Dooma–Chamdang bypass in Assam claimed the life of a senior traffic police officer and left several others critically injured on Wednesday, February 4.
Doom Dooma Traffic Police IC, Babul Sonowal was killed after being run over by a speeding vehicle while responding to an earlier accident at the site. The incident unfolded when a Swift car bearing registration number AS 23 G 3375 reportedly ploughed into four to five pedestrians on the bypass, leaving three people critically injured. The injured were immediately rushed to hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
As traffic police personnel rushed to the scene to manage the situation and assist the injured, tragedy struck again. A Mahindra KUV vehicle bearing registration number AR 11 A 5334, travelling from Dibrugarh towards Arunachal Pradesh, rammed into the police personnel and others present at the accident site.
The impact of the second collision proved fatal for IC Babul Sonowal, while two battalion personnel and two other individuals sustained injuries. Sonowal succumbed to his injuries on the spot, officials said.
Police have seized both vehicles involved in the incident and launched an investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events, including allegations of rash and negligent driving. Further legal action is being initiated, and traffic movement on the bypass was temporarily disrupted following the accident.
Authorities have reiterated the need for heightened caution by motorists, particularly near accident-prone zones and emergency response sites, where secondary collisions often pose a serious threat to first responders.
