Assam: Twins spark social media buzz with flawless English speaking skills

In a quaint village of Merachuk near Chaudang Pathar, Assam, two young twin sisters, Diksha and Dipta Thengal, are defying expectations and setting social media abuzz. Both only in Class 1 at a modest Assamese-medium government school, their English-speaking skills sound strikingly native, reminiscent of fluent Latin American speakers rather than rural Indian students.

The girls are the daughters of Dipen and Mridusmita Thengal—both teachers committed to learning. At home, the household environment is immersed in English conversation, creating a natural linguistic cocoon that transcends school language barriers.

This exposure has gifted Diksha and Dipta remarkable fluency. In daily interaction, the twins switch seamlessly to English, leaving listeners astonished by their elegant and effortless articulation. Intriguingly, this linguistic prowess emerges despite several counterintuitive factors: the absence of television and mobile phones, tools often credited for aiding language acquisition today; and their status as early learners who have barely begun to read or write English.

At Merapani National School, where they study, the medium of instruction is Assamese. Yet, these young prodigies break this mold with oral English skills that seem to come from natural immersion rather than formal curriculum.

With parents themselves being educators, Diksha and Dipta present a powerful case of learning beyond textbooks and screens.
