Two notorious brokers, Baputi alias Rekib Ahmed and Riyaz Ahmed of Panikhaiti, were arrested by Nagaon police for allegedly posing as close associates of police officers and extorting money from the public.
The duo reportedly promised help in police-related matters in exchange for cash, claiming to have strong connections with law enforcement officials. Their arrest was made by personnel from the Nonoi Police Station after complaints surfaced about their fraudulent activities.
Police said the two men had been collecting money from several unsuspecting victims by assuring them of favors or leniency in legal cases. Their operations had been going on for some time before the racket came to light.
A case has been registered against them under number 492/25, and both accused have been sent to jail following their arrest. Police urged the public to be cautious of such scams and to report any similar incidents.
Local residents have expressed relief at the arrests, saying such fraudsters tarnish the reputation of the police and prey on vulnerable people. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are trying to identify if more victims were involved.
