Two leopards were found dead in separate incidents inside Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, authorities said. One carcass was recovered from the Panijuri forest camp area in the Burapahar range, while the other was located at the West Bandardubi forest camp area in the Bagori range.
According to Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Bubul Baruah, the Burapahar leopard—estimated to be about six months old—died following a conflict between two leopards. The leopard found in the Bagori range is believed to have died of natural causes related to old age.
Park officials said both carcasses were cremated in accordance with departmental protocols.
Baruah added that preliminary findings at the Panijuri site indicated signs consistent with intra-species aggression. In the Bagori case, the absence of external injuries and the animal’s condition pointed to senescence as the likely cause.
Forest staff from both ranges secured the sites, conducted standard post-mortem procedures, and completed disposal to prevent disease transmission and scavenger activity, officials said.
Authorities noted that monitoring in the affected beats would be intensified in the short term. Further documentation of the incidents has been filed with the department.
