Assam: Two schoolgirls found dead in Kokrajhar tea garden pond

Two schoolgirls were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on May 21, triggering concern and tension in the area.

The bodies of the two students were recovered from a pond at Lalkura Tea Garden in the Dholmara area of Kokrajhar district.

The deceased have been identified as Anamika Bara (15), a Class 9 student, and Charita Lakra (14), a Class 8 student of Dholmara High School.

According to local residents, the two girls had reportedly gone missing after returning from school at around 10 am. Their bodies were later recovered from a pond inside the tea garden at around 1:30 pm.

Police also recovered two bicycles and two pairs of sandals belonging to the girls from the pond embankment.

Local residents have raised questions over the circumstances surrounding the incident and demanded a thorough investigation. Student organisations, including the All Assam Adivasi Students’ Association, along with other groups, have also sought a detailed probe into the matter.

Police reached the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them to Kokrajhar Medical College for post-mortem examination.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The exact cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed.

The incident has created shock and concern in the locality, with police maintaining vigil in the area.
