Assam: Two timber smuggling suspects held after attack on police officer in Dhubri

Two alleged leaders of an organised timber smuggling network were arrested following an attack that left a police officer seriously injured earlier this month.

The arrests were made by Tamarhat Police after an incident on February 7 at Nangalbhanga Market in Ujanpetla, under Tamarhat Police Station.

A team from Rupshi police outpost had reached the market, acting on specific information about the presence of two wanted men linked to forest-related offences in neighbouring Kokrajhar district.

When the police attempted to intercept them, the suspects and their associates allegedly assaulted the team. Jahanuddin Sheikh, the officer on duty, sustained serious injuries during the confrontation and was taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Police said the accused — Fazal Mondal and Saiful Islam Mandal — were being sought in connection with timber smuggling activities and earlier incidents involving attacks on forest department personnel in the Basbari area.

Following the assault, Tamarhat Police launched a follow-up operation and arrested both men on February 13. Investigators allege the duo operated across the Dhubri–Kokrajhar border, taking advantage of forested areas to run illegal timber operations.

A case (No. 10/26) has been registered under provisions relating to assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duty, voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, and other relevant sections of law.

Both accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
