Assam: Undertrial accused in POCSO case dies in Morigaon jail, family demands probe

Tension prevailed in Morigaon, Assam after the death of an undertrial prisoner lodged in Morigaon District Jail. The deceased has been identified as Safikul Islam, a youth from Goroimari in Nagaon district, who was facing trial in connection with a POCSO case.

According to family sources, jail authorities informed Safikul’s father over a phone call around 2:55 am, stating that his son had suddenly fallen ill and was being shifted to Morigaon Civil Hospital. The family was asked to rush immediately.

On reaching the hospital early in the morning, his parents were shocked to learn that Safikul had already passed away. They alleged that instead of seeing him under treatment, they were informed about his death, leaving them devastated.

Hospital authorities have kept the body in the morgue for further procedures. Meanwhile, the bereaved family has demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the young man’s death.
