Assam: UPPL-BPF clash sparks tension along India-Bhutan border in Chirang, one injured

Tension gripped Nichima (No. 16) constituency in Chirang district after violent clashes erupted between supporters of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) during the ongoing election campaign on Sunday, September 14.

According to preliminary reports, supporters of UPPL candidate Ranjit Basumatary launched an attack on the election office of BPF candidate James Basumatary at Domboru Bazar. The assailants reportedly vandalized the premises and damaged at least three four-wheeler vehicles belonging to BPF members, using hammers to smash the vehicles.

The violence left one BPF supporter critically injured, further escalating tensions in the area, which lies along the sensitive India-Bhutan border.

Police and paramilitary forces were quickly deployed to the spot to prevent further escalation and restore order.

Meanwhile, BPF candidate James Basumatary lodged a formal complaint at Amguri Police Station against the UPPL supporters allegedly involved in the attack. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
