Assam: Veer Lachit Sena observes Indigenous Day in Sivasagar; Shrinkhal Chaliha raises Yandabo Treaty issue
The Veer Lachit Sena observed Indigenous (Khilonjiya) Day in Assam's Sivasagar with a series of programmes, including a “Jagaran Yatra” and a public meeting at the historic Talatal Ghar premises on February 24.
Addressing the gathering, Veer Lachit Sena chief Shrinkhal Chaliha said that the day marks the expiry of the Yandabo Treaty and termed it a historic occasion. He stated that the Assam Government and the Government of India should have initiated discussions on the issue.
Chaliha further announced that the Veer Lachit Sena would prepare and submit a detailed dossier to the Government of India regarding matters concerning the indigenous people of Assam.
Asserting the organisation’s stand, he said that the identity and rights of the indigenous Assamese people must be protected and that no form of dominance by illegal immigrants or outsiders would be tolerated in the state. He also clarified that the Veer Lachit Sena is not aligned with or a proxy of any political party, including the BJP or the Congress, alleging that attempts have been made by certain IT cells to portray the organisation otherwise.
The Indigenous Day programme was organised at the historic Talatal Ghar complex in Sivasagar. The event aims to unite various indigenous communities of Assam and promote awareness about their rights.
As part of the observance, a Jagaran Yatra was taken out from Boarding Playground, featuring symbolic displays of the traditional attire, customs, and cultural heritage of different indigenous communities. The rally sought to spread awareness among indigenous people about safeguarding their constitutional and cultural rights.
The open public meeting was scheduled to begin after the Jagaran Yatra reached the Talatal Ghar premises.
