Assam: Vehicle swept away in devastating floods in Baksa district

The tranquil Diring river in Baksa district turned treacherous as devastating floods struck the district, resulting in a Fortuner vehicle being swept away while attempting to cross the raging waters. Rescue efforts by a JCB excavator and public assistance saved the vehicle after nearly two hours of intensive operations. The incident occurred on the route between Mushalpur and Nayabasti, where the absence of a bridge over the Diring river has forced locals to navigate through flooded areas.

The Baksa district has been grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding, further exacerbated by the absence of essential infrastructure. The lack of a bridge connecting Sinadibasti to Mushalpur and Maithabari has left residents with no choice but to wade through the water, facing challenges during their daily commutes.

As the flood situation persists, several areas in Assam continue to bear the brunt of nature's fury. The districts of Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Nalbari, Tamulpur, and Tinsukia have been severely affected, according to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on July 13.

While no human lives were lost in the last 24 hours, the cumulative number of lives lost due to the floods has reached seven. The ASDMA report indicates that rivers like Beki (Road Bridge), Disang (Nanglamuraghat), and Brahmaputra (Dhubri and Neamatighat) are currently flowing above the danger level.

The impact of the floods has been far-reaching, with 179 villages across 19 revenue circles submerged. Furthermore, an estimated 2211.99 hectares of cropland have suffered significant damage throughout Assam, according to the ASDMA.
