Assam: Wild elephant causes havoc in Jakhalabandha, house damaged, minor injured

In a harrowing incident, a wild elephant rampaged through Jakhalabandha late last night, causing extensive damage and endangering the lives of local residents.

The family of Chandan Saikia, who resides near the Jakhalabandha Irrigation Department office, barely escaped with their lives as the elephant demolished their home.

The chaos began at approximately 11 p.m. when the elephant arrived and started tearing down Saikia's house.

Chandan Saikia, along with his wife and young daughter, managed to flee to a neighbor's house just in time, narrowly avoiding the destructive path of the animal.

"The elephant came out of nowhere and started breaking everything. We were terrified but had to act quickly to save our lives," said Saikia, recounting the ordeal.

The elephant's rampage continued for several hours, with the animal leaving the premises only around 4 a.m. By the time the elephant departed, the Saikia family's home was completely demolished.

All the furniture, sleeping beds, boxes, and kitchen items were destroyed, leaving the family, who are daily wage earners, in a dire situation.

Despite the ongoing ruckus, it was only in the morning that the forest department was informed of the incident.
