Assam: Wild elephant rampage leaves trail of destruction in West Karbi Anglong

In a terrifying late-night rampage, a herd of wild elephants stormed the Mailoo area under the Southern Forest Range Office in West Karbi Anglong district, demolishing five houses and destroying large quantities of food grains and household items.

The incident affected two families from Jiribasa and Belbari villages. Rajkumar Ram of Jiribasa lost a concrete house and kitchen, along with stored rice, pulses, clothes, and utensils. In Belbari, Joyram Kumhar's three houses were flattened, and an estimated 1.5 to 2 tons of paddy, jaggery, rice, pulses, and other belongings were ravaged.

Both families managed to flee in the darkness and escape unharmed.

This is not the first such attack in the region. Locals have repeatedly raised concerns over the increasing frequency of elephant raids, alleging negligence by the forest department in implementing effective mitigation measures to protect lives and property.
