Assam: Wild elephant wreaks havoc in Samaguri, locals slam delayed response from forest department

A wild elephant went on a destructive rampage on June 17 night, damaging several homes and essential household items while residents were fast asleep in Samaguri, Assam.

According to locals, the elephant entered the residential area around midnight and demolished multiple houses, tearing through walls and rooftops. One household reported the complete destruction of an installed power inverter, compounding their losses.

Although the property damage was extensive, no human casualties or injuries were reported as residents narrowly escaped harm. “We were asleep when we heard loud crashing sounds. By the time we rushed out, part of the house was already shattered,” a resident recounted.

Anger brewed in the community as villagers alleged a delayed response from the Forest Department, despite repeated distress calls. The delay has sparked frustration and renewed demands for immediate intervention protocols and long-term preventive measures to tackle recurring human-elephant conflict in the region.
