Assam: Woman allegedly killed by husband in Margherita, police launch probe

A woman was allegedly killed by her husband in a brutal attack at Rana Gaon in No. 3 Udaipur under Lekhapani Police Station in Tinsukia district on December 13.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Nita Chhetri (40), while the accused is her husband Devi Bahadur Chhetri, also known as Chanu (45), who allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon.After the incident, the accused allegedly locked the body inside the puja room (prayer room) of the house and fled the scene. Upon receiving information, a team from Lekhapani Police rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.
The probe is being conducted in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. Given the brutal nature of the crime, a forensic team has also been informed and is expected to examine the scene. Police restricted the entry of civilians and media personnel into the house to facilitate the investigation.
Sources said the accused later surrendered at the Jagun Police Outpost. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the crime.
