Assam woman allegedly trafficked to Oman; family files fresh complaint against two accused

A fresh complaint has been filed at Juria Police Station in Assam’s Nagaon district against two alleged members of an international human trafficking network, following allegations that a 24-year-old woman was sent to Oman and subjected to physical and mental abuse.

The complaint names Iman Ali, a resident of Kachari Gaon in Juria, and Sabikun Nehar of Dalani Juria. The allegations against them have not been independently verified.

According to the victim’s family, the woman, Jaharun Nessa, daughter of Narjul Haque of Kadamoni Town village, was allegedly befriended by Nehar through Instagram. The family alleged that she was lured with promises of a luxurious lifestyle and persuaded to travel abroad.

The family further alleged that a passport was arranged for Jaharun Nessa without their knowledge and that she was secretly sent to Oman.

After reaching Oman, she was allegedly not provided with reliable employment and was instead made to work in temporary jobs. Her family claimed that she had faced continuous physical and mental abuse over the past three months.

When the family approached the two accused seeking help to secure her release from the alleged agent’s control, Nehar reportedly demanded Rs 2.20 lakh over the phone to facilitate her rescue, according to the complaint.

Left with few options, the family approached Juria Police Station, seeking action against the two named individuals.

The complaint has also brought renewed attention to allegations of a wider trafficking network operating in the region. The report alleges that vulnerable women are lured with promises of better lives, moved to Mumbai after passports are arranged, and subsequently handed over to overseas agents in exchange for amounts ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

The report further claims that similar complaints have previously been filed against the alleged network at different police stations. The status of those complaints and any police action in the present case could not be independently confirmed.

The latest complaint has raised questions about the alleged trafficking route and the circumstances under which the woman was sent abroad. Further details on the police response were not available.
