Assam woman alleges abandonment, threats after love marriage; family appeals for police intervention
A young woman in Assam's Dhubri district has approached the police alleging that she was abandoned by her husband shortly after their love marriage and that her family has since been subjected to threats and intimidation.
The woman, identified as Mamta Kumari, along with her parents, has sought the intervention of the Dhubri district police administration, demanding protection and legal action against those allegedly responsible.
According to the complaint, Bishnu Bin, a resident of the Dhubirchar area near Dhubri town, was in a relationship with Mamta Kumari. The couple reportedly eloped and later solemnised their marriage at Mahamaya Snanghat in Bagribari.
Following the marriage, the couple began living in a rented accommodation in the Bidyapara area of Dhubri town. However, Mamta has alleged that her husband soon began subjecting her to physical abuse. She further claimed that after just over a month of marriage, Bishnu Bin left her and has remained untraceable since.
After being abandoned, Mamta returned to her parental home. The family has alleged that instead of resolving the matter, members of the husband's family began threatening them.
Serious allegations have been levelled against Birender Bin, identified as the groom's maternal uncle. The victim's family claims that he has repeatedly threatened them and attempted to pressure Mamta into marrying another person in exchange for a monetary settlement.
The family has also alleged that Birender Bin is using his political connections to influence the matter and intimidate them. These allegations, however, remain unverified and no official response from the accused side was immediately available.
Claiming that they are financially vulnerable and unable to withstand continued pressure, Mamta and her parents have appealed to the police to trace the husband, ensure their safety and conduct a fair investigation into the allegations.
Police have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
