Assam woman builds family’s future with Orunodoi scheme funds, sets example for others
At a time when questions are often raised over the impact of government welfare schemes, a woman from Assam’s Kaliabor has quietly turned government assistance into a story of dignity and self-reliance.
Using financial aid received under the Orunodoi scheme, Priyashi Rajkhowa has set up a small roadside eatery and is now single-handedly supporting her family while ensuring her children’s education.A resident of Kuwaritol in Kaliabor, Rajkhowa invested the funds she received as a beneficiary of the Orunodoi scheme to establish a modest tea, bread and ghugni stall along the roadside. What began as a small initiative has now become the primary source of income for her household.
Through her daily earnings, Rajkhowa is not only managing household expenses but also educating her son and daughter — a step she considers her biggest achievement. Her journey reflects how targeted financial support, when utilised effectively, can translate into sustainable livelihood opportunities.
In a region where access to stable employment remains a challenge for many women, Rajkhowa’s initiative stands out as a model of grassroots entrepreneurship. By transforming welfare assistance into a means of long-term income generation, she has emerged as an inspiration for others to pursue self-reliance and financial independence.
Her story underscores the transformative potential of government welfare schemes when beneficiaries channel the support towards productive ventures.
