Assam: Woman killed in Nagaon road accident, residents block highway over safety concerns

A road accident in Assam's Nagaon district late Saturday night, May 30, left a woman dead and triggered a temporary blockade on the Nagaon–Nolaltoli state highway, as residents demanded measures to improve road safety in the area.

The accident occurred at South Bhomoraguri in Ambagan when a speeding motorcycle struck a pedestrian, identified as Laxmi Mondal. She suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Jakhalabandha Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

The two men riding the motorcycle, Sanjit Basumatary and Bishnu Basumatary, both residents of Shalpara, were also injured in the crash and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Following the incident, local residents blocked the highway, alleging a lack of traffic control measures and raising concerns over road safety in the area.

Police from Ambagan station reached the spot, managed the situation and held discussions with the protesters. The blockade was lifted after officers assured residents that steps would be taken to improve traffic management and prevent similar accidents.

Police have seized the motorcycle involved in the crash, bearing registration number AS-12-AF-7263, and further investigation is underway.
