Assam: Workers at Dhubri-Phulbari bridge construction site protest over labour violations

Workers employed at Assam's Dhubri-Phulbari bridge construction site, on November 15 staged a protest outside the company’s office in Adabari, Dhubri.

The workers, employed by L&T Company alleged multiple violations of labour laws, demanding immediate action to address their grievances.

They accused the company of failing to increase their salaries despite rising costs of living, highlighting the lack of provision for emergency leave, with workers reportedly being denied leave even on Sundays. Complaints of unfair wages further fueled the unrest.

Sanitation workers at the site voiced additional concerns, alleging that their salaries had been unjustly reduced, adding to their financial hardships. The workers warned that their protest would continue until their demands, including fair wages, salary increments, and better leave policies are met.

The Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge, being constructed by L&T Company, is a critical infrastructure project connecting Assam and Meghalaya. However, this labor unrest has cast a shadow over the progress of the ambitious project.

Attempts to contact L&T Company officials for a statement remained unanswered at the time of reporting.
