World Environment Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Paharpur Sema village under the 83rd Margherita constituency, where a large-scale plantation and anti-plastic pledge event was organized by the Paharpur Sema Village Council.
Over 500 saplings were planted during the day-long programme, with active participation from local residents, community leaders, and forest officials. The event aimed to promote ecological restoration and sustainable living under this year’s global theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution."
Present at the event were Paharpur village pradhan Hukato Sema, Council President Hotokhu Sema, and Secretary Khekato Sema, along with numerous villagers. The saplings were generously provided by the Jagun Range Forest Office under the Digboi Forest Division.
Speaking to reporters, Council Secretary Khekato Sema highlighted the urgency of the environmental crisis posed by rampant plastic use. “This year’s World Environment Day theme, ‘Beat the Plastic,’ reminds us of the harm plastics have caused to our environment. Our village has pledged to permanently avoid plastic use, and we are committed to becoming a model for eco-conscious living,” he said.
