In a deeply disturbing incident, a 23-year-old youth lost his life after being brutally assaulted by locals following a road mishap at Bharali Chowk in Bogamati under Assam’s Baksa district on August 20. The victim has been identified as Abhishek Das, who was returning from Bogamati’s Grassland with three friends when the tragedy unfolded.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, the group’s vehicle collided with a roadside shop pillar while attempting to avoid an e-rickshaw, causing the doors of the car to jam shut. Abhishek reportedly managed to free himself through the sunroof, but instead of receiving assistance, he was allegedly surrounded and attacked by the e-rickshaw owner and the shop owner.
The assault turned vicious as Abhishek was dragged nearly 50 feet from the crash site and struck on the neck with a rod, leaving him grievously injured. His companions were also subjected to beatings. Despite efforts to rush him to a hospital in Rangia, Abhishek succumbed to his injuries en route, owing to delays in ambulance arrival and the distance to medical facilities.
Four days later, Abhishek’s grieving family lodged a formal complaint at the Tamulpur police station, alleging that his death was the result of mob assault rather than just a road accident. Police confirmed the registration of the case and said the matter is under investigation, though no arrests have been made so far.
A video that surfaced on social media added weight to the family’s claims, showing the three surviving youths injured and trapped inside the car while a mob gathered around them.
