Assam: Youth drowns in Aie river in Bongaigaon district amid Ashokastami celebrations

A youth lost his life after he drowned in the Aie river while taking part in the Ashokastami celebrations in the Abhayapuri town of Bongaigaon district of Assam on March 29.

The incident took place in the Dumerguri area under the Bogaigaon district when he visited the area and went for a dip along with four of his friends.

The current of the river was so high that three of his friends got carried away. However, the two managed to escape from the current, but the youth failed to recover himself from the strong current of the river.

The body of the youth identified as Sanjeeb Sarkar was recovered after more than four hours of a search and rescue operation by the police along with the local people.

''A youth named Sanjeeb Sarkar drowned today while taking bath in the Aie river as he crossed the safety area and went ahead in the river. Around two hours after the incident, locals along with the police recovered the body,'' said a local while speaking to media over the matter.

''Sarkar was a student of Abhayapuri College,'' he added.

It has been alleged by the police that the organizers of the Ashokastami Mela in Dumerguri didn't have any permission from the authorities to organize the event.

In the wake of this incident, the president of the organizing committee was taken into custody.
