Miles apart, yet connected with a common thread, the Assamese diaspora in New Zealand is celebrating Rongali Bihu with utmost zeal and enthusiasm.
The sound of joy and the welcoming of spring saw a major boost as the Assamese brethren engaged in a day-long celebration of the community’s much loved festival, Rongali Bihu.
President of Assam Society of New Zealand Dr Nasir Ahmed inaugurated the program of Rongali Bihu with a welcome address. In the context of the speech, the President lauded the efforts of the Assamese diaspora for keeping their culture alive even though they are away from their motherland.
A memoir titled 'Kuhipat' was also released in line with the colourful Bihu. Dr Nasir Ahmed, Deepika Sharma, Nilakshi Sharma, Jilmil Vara, Rajdeep Barua, Reisa Laish, Dhanjit Kalita, Sourab Sanyal and others were also present at the launch.
It is worth mentioning that the Assam Society of New Zealand, formed by the progressive Assamese community, has taken various steps to promote Assamese culture in New Zealand, as well as various social welfare work.
