Assam's Dhubri on high alert as major rivers rise above danger level amid heavy rainfall
Assam's Dhubri district administration has issued a high alert across riverine and low-lying areas after continuous rainfall caused a significant rise in the water levels of several major rivers, raising concerns of possible flooding.
According to the District Disaster Management Department, the Gaurang, Tipkai, Champavati and Gangadhar rivers have witnessed a sharp increase in water levels as relentless rainfall continues across the region. All four rivers eventually drain into the Brahmaputra, adding to the flood threat in the district.
In response to the evolving situation, the district administration has activated emergency preparedness measures and intensified monitoring of vulnerable areas. Residents living along riverbanks have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities.
Project Officer of the District Disaster Management Department, Moferjal Sarkar, said field teams have already been deployed to flood-prone locations. Disaster management volunteers, including Aapda Mitras, and field officers have been stationed in vulnerable riverside villages to issue early warnings and assist residents in case of sudden flooding.
The administration has also advised extreme caution for long-distance boat and ferry services. The Water Transport Department has been directed to maintain round-the-clock surveillance of river transport operations to prevent accidents.
"The water levels in the Gaurang, Tipkai, Champavati and Gangadhar rivers are rising rapidly. We have sounded an alert in vulnerable riverbank areas and are closely monitoring the situation to safeguard the public from potential dangers," Sarkar said.
Authorities have appealed to the public to stay updated through official advisories and avoid venturing into flooded or high-risk areas unless absolutely necessary
