Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on February 1 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam on February 3 and lay the foundation stones for major healthcare initiatives. The highlight of the visit is the extensive remodeling of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCh) which is poised to become the largest medical center in eastern India.
Chief Minister Sarma, addressing the media, outlined the ambitious project, stating that the current GMCh building would be transformed into a new-age facility, accommodating around 3,500 patients simultaneously. The project, estimated at Rs 3250 crores, aims to construct a state-of-the-art hospital to cater to the increasing healthcare needs of the region.
Speaking exclusively to India Today NE, GMCH Superintendent Abhijeet Sarma expressed his enthusiasm for the government's initiative, calling it a monumental step. He mentioned, "The remodeling of GMCh is a significant leap forward. While our ultimate target is to accommodate 5,000 patients at a time, initially, 3,500 patients will receive treatment simultaneously."
In addition to the GMCh project, Chief Minister Sarma disclosed that Prime Minister Modi would also lay the foundation stone for the Karimganj Medical College in Ratabari.
