Assam’s Jatinga–Harangajao stretch may open partially by June as delays hit key works

A 25-km stretch between Jatinga and Harangajao in Assam is likely to be opened to traffic as a two-lane road by June, according to officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), offering partial relief to commuters despite ongoing construction setbacks.

The project, originally scheduled for full opening by January 31, 2026, has been delayed due to pending work on two railway overbridges. Project Director Yogesh Rao said the incomplete structures have held up full commissioning, but authorities are now preparing to allow limited vehicular movement on two lanes in the coming weeks.

Concerns have also surfaced over the condition of a 1.8-km tunnel near Maibong along National Highway 27, where sections of the road have deteriorated. The issue has drawn criticism over delayed maintenance and safety risks for motorists.

Rao said a fresh assessment of the tunnel has been assigned to RITES Limited, which will recommend a long-term solution. Temporary repair work is currently underway, though progress has been affected by the monsoon. Officials added that faulty lighting and CCTV systems inside the tunnel will be restored to improve visibility and surveillance.

Separately, action has been initiated against a contractor responsible for maintaining the Manderdisa–Nirim Bungalow stretch. The firm, awarded a seven-year contract in 2023, has reportedly failed to carry out any maintenance work for the past 10 months.

Payments to the contractor have been suspended, and authorities have warned of blacklisting if compliance does not improve. A fresh tender may be issued within 15 days to appoint a new agency if the situation remains unresolved.
