Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived at the historic Bholaguri tea estate in Gohpur today to inspect the land allotted for the upcoming Kanaklata University. The university, to be built on 600 bighas of land in the tea garden, is set to play an important role in the academic development of North Assam. The Assam government plans to begin construction work in the coming days.
During his visit, CM Sarma addressed the media, outlining the state's commitment to the project and the welfare of the tea garden workers. "Today we met the tea garden workers and their unions and had a meeting with them about their well-being and safety. We have identified the land that will be allotted for the university," Sarma said.
He explained the next steps in the process, stating, "Now the engineers will come and do the needful inspection of the land for further construction. After 20-25 days, I will call the tea garden workers union to Guwahati to hold a meeting and decide upon their future. If we can complete these two major steps of approval, then by the end of December 2024, we can begin the construction of the university."
The Chief Minister also highlighted the broader vision for Gahpur, positioning it as a key educational hub in Assam. "We are giving our thoughts for the construction of Kanaklata University alongside a major plan for Gahpur to be set up as the education hub of Assam," he added.
CM Sarma emphasized the importance of cooperation from the tea garden workers in moving the project forward. "The entire project depends on the decisions taken by the tea garden workers and their permission. If they lend us permission to proceed, then after a month we can come to a concrete state about the project. Though the tea workers reside here, it is still government land, and that's why I am hopeful that this process will be smooth to take forward the project."
The announcement of Kanaklata University is a significant step towards enhancing the educational infrastructure in North Assam, with the potential to transform Gahpur into a central hub for higher education in the region.
